The return of John Williams
May 9th 2008 05:02
For fans of great music written for the silver screen, there's no more highly anticipated score than that for the upcoming blockbuster Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
After a career-long hiatus of almost 2 and 1/2 years, we will once again hear new music from the great John Williams whose famous themes have transcended cinema and permeated the public consciousness for over 3 decades now.
The great man, amazingly, is 76 years old and will obviously maintain working with his longest collaborator Steven Spielberg for as long as possible.............until his final breath in other words!!!!! They first worked together on The Sugarland Express in 1972 and Williams has been Spielberg's exclusive composer of choice ever since.
Williams almost single-handedly resurrected the huge symphonic score in the 70's with his unforgettable work on Jaws, Star Wars, Superman, E.T, Raiders of the Lost Ark and so many others.
The man is a musical genius and a Hollywood legend and it'll be great to hear his incorporation of both old and new themes for this new installment of the Indiana Jones saga.
This 2 and 1/2 year absence from the big screen actually follows what was one of the maestro's most prolific years in a long time in 2005 when he wrote the scores for no less than 4 films, all of them fine efforts - Stars Wars Episode III, War of the Worlds, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Munich.
Most film music fans also hold out hope that he'll return in the next year or two to compose the music for the final Harry Potter film which would be fitting considering he wrote 3 outstanding scores for the first trio of films, especially The Prisoner of Azkaban which is easily one of the finest scores of the last decade.
The score to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be released on May 20.
I can't wait to hear it! (:
