A very different David Lynch Story
April 30th 2008 04:23
The Straight Story will probably remain David Lynch's one 'moment' of sanity for quite some time, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for those of us who cherish his elusive, incomprehensible, surreal works.
But it's still overwhelming proof of how effective he can be when tackling a more conventional story..................althou gh that doesn't sound exactly right, does it!!?? An old man decides to drive a John Deere mower 300-odd miles across America to visit his dying brother who he hasn't spoken to in years!
It's as uncomplicated a tale as you can imagine but the rich journey Alvin Straight takes sees him encountering plenty of interesting people along the way and there are some very funny and touching moments to treasure here.
It's a slow, ponderous film but one of simple beauty and wisdom.
Richard Farnsworth seems as though he was born for this, his last role (before tragically taking his own life).
And regular Lynch composer Angelo Badalamenti provides a haunting melancholy score with a few rustic touches - his combination of acoustic and synth soundscapes makes for a perfect compliment (and a great cd too..........believe me, I've heard it a million times, mostly late at night when it really works its magic).
The Straight Story is another small gem and definately one worth revisiting - especially now that David Lynch is back at work in his asylum! (and I haven't even seen Inland Empire yet!).

I also love the end, when his brother asks Alvin if he came all the way just to see him on that thing, and his reaction when Alvin says he does....bwwaaa *cries*
